Required Documents

- Valid driving licence — your national licence is accepted. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not required for EU, US, or UK licence holders but is recommended as a precaution.
- Passport or national ID — required at the time of vehicle handover.
- Minimum age: 21 years — with at least one year of driving experience. Some premium vehicles require the driver to be 25+.
- Security deposit — a refundable deposit is held at pickup. The amount varies by vehicle category and is returned in full when the car is returned without damage.

Understanding Morocco's Road Network
Morocco has three main types of road: autoroutes (motorways, prefix A), routes nationales (primary roads, prefix N), and routes provinciales (secondary roads, prefix R or P). Speed limits are 120 km/h on autoroutes, 100 km/h on national roads, and 60 km/h in towns.
Autoroutes require tolls (péages), payable in cash at booths. Budget roughly 30–80 MAD per major intercity stretch. It is well worth the cost — the autoroute between Casablanca and Marrakech, for example, cuts a five-hour journey to under three.
Traffic in Casablanca and Rabat can be heavy during rush hours (07:30–09:00 and 17:00–19:00). Plan long drives outside these windows where possible.
Mountain roads in the High Atlas (particularly over the Tichka Pass toward Ouarzazate) are winding but paved. They are driven safely in a standard sedan — just allow extra time and drive at a relaxed pace. Snow can close higher passes between December and February.

Driving Tips & Local Rules
Morocco drives on the right side of the road. Road signs follow the European convention (French and Arabic). Here are the most important things to know before you set off:
- Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Fines are enforced.
- Mobile phone use while driving (without hands-free) is illegal and actively policed.
- Police checkpoints (barrages) are common on national roads. Keep your rental documents, passport, and driving licence within easy reach.
- Roundabouts give priority to vehicles already in the circle — the opposite of France.
- Fuel stations are plentiful on major routes but sparse on mountain or desert roads. Fill up whenever the gauge drops below half.
- Animals (donkeys, camels, goats) occasionally cross rural roads. Slow down and wait — no need to sound your horn.
Download an offline map (Maps.me or Google Maps offline area) before you depart. Mobile data coverage is good on motorways and in cities but can be patchy in remote mountain and desert regions.
